Pegula Continues to Win Easy

After having struggled past Lauren Davis in the very first round of this competition, Pegula looks to have found her rhythm in the competition. She made the last eight stage with another straightforward win, as she defeated Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 13 minutes.

Pegula had earlier dropped just five games in her second round encounter against Cristina Bucsa and then lost only four games against Elisabetta Cocciaretto as well.

Against Tsurenko, Pegula raced off to two breaks of serves in the first set, and then again was 5-1 up in the second set before losing a bit of her focus. Failing to serve it out at 5-2, she broke Tsurenko right back in the next game to wrap up the contest.

What this means is that Pegula has now made it to the quarterfinals at all the four majors with Wimbledon being her last remaining frontier. Will Wimbledon also become her first major semifinal?

Vondrousova Registers a Comeback Victory

After three successive wins over tricky opponents, Vondrousova had started off a 2/5 favourite against Marie Bouzkova but made heavy weather of winning the encounter.

Vondrousova, who had earlier staved off the Peyton Stearns challenge in the first round and then shocked Veronika Kudermetova and Donna Vekic in the following two rounds, make it to her second major quarterfinal with a three-set win over Bouzkova.

She won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the fourth round despite getting broken four times in the encounter. In turn she got the better of Bouzkova’s serve on five occasions including twice in a row from 3-3 in the final set of the match.

The former French Open finalist had fallen on bad times with respect to her fitness but more than four years on she looks to have found the perfect setting to show she wasn’t a top-15 player for nothing. Win or lose she will return to the top 30 of the WTA charts but she would also know she can do a lot more here.

Pegula v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

We don’t think Pegula will have it easy but at 7/10 her win looks reasonably priced. Can expect a third set in this.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
