Alcaraz Fights Back to Beat Berrettini

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz fought back after losing the first set to beat 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round on Monday.

Thanks to the win, the world no. 1 reached his maiden Wimbledon quarterfinal. The 20-year-old, who is playing just his third Wimbledon, had lost in the second round on his debut two years ago and was beaten in the round of 16 by Jannik Sinner last year.

However, this year, Alcaraz has been in sublime form and a 44-4 season record is a testament of that. Thanks to Monday’s win, Alcaraz has improved to 9-0 on grass as he won the Queen’s Club title before the start of Wimbledon. in all Alcaraz has featured in six finals this year and won five of them.

Against Berrettini, Alcaraz found himself a set down after the Italian got the solitary break of the first set in the eighth game. Alcaraz, who missed on three break point chances in the first set, wasn’t broken again in the match, while he converted 4 of 13 break point chances he created over the next three sets to register a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 victory.

This was a second straight match when Alcaraz lost a set. On Saturday, he had seen off a stubborn Nicolas Jarry 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5 in the fourth round.

An 11-time champion at the tour level,  Alcaraz had begun his Wimbledon campaign with a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 win over Jeremy Chardy in the first round and then defeated Alexandre Müller 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in round 2.

The 2022 US Open champion will now be looking to reach a third major semifinal. His second semifinal appearance was at Roland Garros against Novak Djokovic, but Alcaraz was denied a place in the final by the eventual champion.

He could once again meet the Serbian in the final and bring an end to his phenomenal streak in the grass court major. But both players still need two wins to reach that far and instead of looking to far beyond, they will be razor focused on the job at hand.
