The Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova had won just one match at Wimbledon prior to this year, but the world no. 42 has entered the semifinals this year by upsetting the fourth seed Jessica Pegula on Tuesday.

Vondrousova had her back against the wall as she trailed 1-4 in the final set. But she made an emphatic comeback and won five games in a row to clinch the one hour and 55 minute contest 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Vondrousova out-aced the American 7-0 and struck 24 winners in the match. She saved 6 of 11 break points and converted 5 of 12 to move into the final four of a major for just the second time in her career. The previous time she reached this stage was at the French Open in 2019. She went on to reach the final at Roland Garros but finished runner-up to Ashleigh Barty.

The lefty, who was also the silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, is 29-10 across levels this season and 7-1 on grass. Before this season, she had won just two main draw matches on the surface, but this year has been different for the 24-year-old.

Following her run to the quarterfinals in Berlin, she began her Wimbledon campaign with three straight set victories in a row. First she beat Peyton Stearns 6-2, 7-5 in the first round, then she upset the 12th seed Veronica Kudermetova 6-3, 6-3 in round 2 before knocking out the 20th seed Donna Vekic 6-1, 7-5 in the third round.

Svitolina Stuns Swiatek

Barely nine months after giving birth to her daughter, Elina Svitolina has stormed into the semifinals of Wimbledon.

The Ukrainian, who has received a wild card for the tournament, edged past the top seed Iga Swiatek in a nearly three hour quarterfinal on Tuesday.

The world no. 1 was unable to close out the first set after building a 3-5 lead, as the gutsy Svitolina fought back by winning four games in a row and sealing the opening set.

The Pole was the first to break in the second set as well, but Svitolina got the break back only to lose the set in the tiebreak. Just when everyone thought the momentum had shifted towards the world no. 1, Svitolina came out firing on all cylinders in the final set. She raced to a 5-1 lead, then allowed Swiatek to hold a second service game in the set, before serving out the match in the next game to register a 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 victory.

The 28-year-old, who returned from her maternity leave just three months ago, will be featuring in her third Grand Slam semifinal after she reached the last four stage at the 2019 Wimbledon and the US Open.

It’s been a remarkable comeback for Svitolina so far. The Tokyo Games bronze medalist claimed her 17th tour level title by winning the Strasbourg Open. She was also a quarterfinalist at the French Open. Now at Wimbledon, she has beaten four previous Grand slam winners in Venus Williams (first round); Sofia Kenin (third round); Victoria Azarenka. (fourth round) and Swiatek (quarterfinal). The only non-Grand Slam winner that Svitolina defeated en route the semifinals was Elise Mertens, who went down in three sets.

Can Svitolina, who showed so much of promise between 2017 and 2022, reach her maiden Grand slam final?

Vondrousova v Svitolina Prediction and Tip
