Second seed Novak Djokovic played his 400th Grand Slam match on Tuesday and came out on top by beating Andrey Rublev in a four-set Wimbledon quarterfinal.

Djokovic, who won his 100th match at the grass court major on Monday against Hubert Hurkacz, needed two hours and 50 minutes to beat the Russian 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3. The Serb saved 7 of 8 break points and converted 5 of 12 to extend his winning streak at Wimbledon to 33 matches.

Djokovic, who has won the last four Wimbledon titles from 2018 to 2022, is chasing an eighth title at SW19, which will tie him for most number of victories at Wimbledon with Roger Federer.

A fifth consecutive title will also be his third major of the season and a 24th Grand Slam title in all.

But despite being the favourite, Djokovic won’t be looking too far ahead and will focus on the semifinal. It is the 12th time he has made it to the final four stage at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Djokovic had begun his campaign with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Pedro Cachín in the first round and then followed that up with another straight sets victory over Jordan Thompson of Australia.

Stan Wawrinka also could not take a set of Djokovic in the third round. But the former number one was tested in the round of 16 and the quarterfinal, with both Hubert Hurkacz and Rublev taking a set of him.

Djokovic, who joined Roger Federer and Serena Williams as the only players with over 400 Grand Slam matches, will be looking to reach a 35th Grand Slam final.

This was Sinner’s second four-set win of the tournament, following his 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 win over Quentin Halys in the third round.

The eighth seed had won the first two rounds against Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Diego Scwartzmann in straight sets respectively. He also won his fourth round match against Daniel Elahi Galán in straight sets, beating the Colombian 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-3.

A quarterfinalist in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Halle, Sinner improved his season record on grass to 8-2. He is a seven-time champion on the tour, and has one title (Montpellier) and two runner-up finishes (Rotterdam and Miami) this year.
