Alcaraz Tops Rune

World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz stormed into his third Grand Slam semifinal with a straight sets win over Holger Rune on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old, who won the U.S. Open title last year, was a semifinalist at the French Open this year. He is now a win away from reaching a second major final.

After both players failed to break serve in the first set, Alcaraz dominated the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead. He continued his dominance in the next two sets as he did not face a break point in the second and third sets, but converted a break in each set to win the two hour and 23 minute contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4.

The Spaniard won 79% points on his first serve, struck 35 winners and made just 13 unforced errors to knock out the sixth seed and keep charging towards a first Wimbledon final.

Alcaraz, who won the title at Queen’s on June 25, has improved his grass court record to 10-0 in 2023.

He began his Wimbledon campaign with straight set wins over Jérémy Chardy and Alexandre Müller in the first two rounds, but had a set taken of him in each of the next two rounds, before he defeated Nicolas Jarry and Matteo Berrettini respectively.

Alcaraz is 45-4 in 2023, and this after he began his season in the second half of February due to a hamstring injury that he picked before the Australian Open.

This is his 10th tournament of the season and Alcaraz has made at least the semifinals on nine occasions. An 11-time tour level champion, he has won five titles from six finals this year and is expected to reach his 15th career final with a win on Friday.

Medvedev Ends Eubanks’ Fairytale Run

Daniil Medvedev ended Christopher Eubanks’ fascinating run at Wimbledon on Wednesday as the Russian reached the semifinals of the grass court major for the first time in his career.

Medvedev, who has been in tremendous form in 2023, had taken the opening set, but he soon found himself two sets to one down as the world no. 43 took the second and the third sets. Medvedev kept his chances alive by winning the fourth set tiebreak and then he raced to victory in the final set to move into a sixth Grand Sam semifinal.

On Friday, he will be aiming to reach a fifth major final. Medvedev had won the U.S. Open title in 2021, while he finished runner-up in 2019. He also had back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022.

While Medvedev has displayed great form throughout the season so far, his Grand Slam results were ordinary as he bowed out of the third round at the Australian Open and made a first round exit from Roland Garros. But he has exceeded expectations at Wimbledon. He began with straight set victories over Arthur Fery and Adrian Mannarino in the first two rounds and then rallied from a set down to beat Marton Fucsovics in four. In teh fourth round, he was leading Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, when the Czech retired from the contest, while in the quarterfinal he pulled off his toughest win so far, beating Eubanks 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 in three hours.

Medvedev, who had struck just 29 aces in the first four rounds, served 28 against Eubanks. He also struck 52 winners, which was 22 fewer than the American; but he made just 13 unforced errors compared to Eubanks’ 55.

A 20-time winner from 33 finals, Medvedev is 46-8 this season and has won five titles from six finals. The only final that he lost this year was to Alcaraz in Indian Wells. Can he get a revenge over the Spaniard or will the latter hand him a second defeat?
