Our 2023 WTA Palermo Open Predictions & Picks
The clay-court season may be up for most players, but a brief post-Wimbledon stop on the dirt offers some valuable ranking points and a chance to lift some silver for the WTA’s undercard.
One of those is Elisabetta Cocciaretto who is looking to become the first Italian to win in Palermo since 2013.
Cocciaretto spearheads Italian women’s tennis as their No. 1 player, sitting 44th in the rankings. She has played her finest tennis this year and the bulk of her success has come at WTA 125 level and ITF where she has amassed seven of her eight titles on red clay.
Egypt’s Mayar Sherif is another name to keep tabs on during the week. The 27-year-old became the highest-ranked Egyptian tennis player in history, surpassing Ismail El Shafei, the previous holder of that distinction in the men’s, and sits at 31st in the rankings.
Sherif won back-to-back 125 titles in Makarska and Valencia, and it has to be said, Wimbledon came at an inopportune moment. Still, this is a chance as good as any to get her hands on a second Tour title.
China’s Qinwen Zheng enters with a wild card but she is the second seed. Zheng had a below-par Roland Garros by her own lofty standards and she’ll want to put things right in Palermo.
But outside the undercards, the big favorite is undoubtedly Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, who is surprisingly without a WTA title this year.
- Outright Winner Tip: Daria Kasatkina
- Outright Winner Dark Horse Tip: Elisabetta Cocciaretto
