Ymer Returns from a Solid Grass Showing

Winning matches was proving to be difficult for Ymer after he had been defaulted from the Lyon Open in late May for hitting the umpire’s chair.

He lost three matches in a row following that outburst, two of which came on grass, leaving him with a few question-marks over his immediate future.

The good news is that Ymer looks to have put that behind him and over the following two tournaments on grass – at Eastbourne and at Wimbledon – the Swede has done well to shrug off the past.

Wins over Botic van de Zandschulp and Liam Broady took him to the quarterfinal stage of the Eastbourne International, and he then went on to overcome Alex Molcan and shock Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon.

Ymer could have gone even further but for a sterling performance from Daniel Elahi Galan who stalled his progress in five sets.

He now returns to his most preferred surface but will be up against a player who has done equally well on it.

Varillas Does Nothing on Grass

Such is Varillas’ preference for clay that the only tournament he featured in on grass this season came at Wimbledon. He collected his prize money for his first round appearance and flew out after getting dumped in the opener by Lorenzo Musetti.

That was his only time on grass for the year and in the very next week, Varillas was back on clay as he took part on the Challenger circuit.

Featuring in the Salzburg competition on it, Varillas overcame Federico Delbonis in the first round before losing to Elias Ymer, Mikael’s brother.

A semifinalist at the Buenos Aires Open earlier this year, the question is if Varillas can stop another Ymer from defeating him. We think he will need to play out of his skin here.

Ymer v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Not much to choose between these two and a third set looks likely. We will go with Ymer, who looks to be in a better rhythm than his opponent.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 8.5 games in the first set: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Ymer to win: 1/1
