He was ranked outside the top 100 at the start of the grass swing but Thompson has done well to pull his ranking back to 70th in the world at the moment. That is also his season-best ranking and while it’s still some way away from his career-best of 43rd in the world, the Aussie will know he can build on his performances over the last month and a half.
Especially given that he has one more tournament on this surface left for the season.
Thompson started off his grass swing with a semifinal appearance on the Challenger tour and went on to make it to the final at the Rosmalen Open.
Second round appearances at the Queen’s Club, Mallorca Open and Wimbledon followed suit and while he would have loved to do slightly better there, he kept accumulating the ranking points in each one of them.
He now opens his Newport campaign with an eye at making it to the semifinal, the stage at which he had got in 2021 in this competition.

Kovacevic in His First Year on Grass
Kovacevic has never been ranked in the top 100 and to add to that, this is his first season playing on grass at any level. This is a player who started playing tennis a good seven years ago.
Unfortunately for Kovacevic, he hasn’t done too much of note on grass this year.
Starting out at the Surbiton Challenger competition – the same tournament Thompson got to his semifinal too – Kovacevic was knocked out in the first round before suffering a similar fate at the Nottingham Challenger.
A third successive first round at the Ilkley Challenger followed suit as Kovacevic struggled to find his feet on this surface.
It was only during the Wimbledon 2023 qualifiers that the American finally won a couple of rounds only to fall in the third. He followed that up with a hardcourt competition at the Chicago Challenger where he won a round but now returns to grass with a hope he can put up a brave front.
