Kaja Juvan overcame Ukraine’s Valeriya Strakhova in three sets on Sunday to reach the main draw of the Budapest Open. The Slovenian saved 2 of 8 break points and converted 6 of 10 to win the second qualifying round.

Juvan, who failed to qualify in 2018, has made it to the main draw in Budapest for the first time. She has a 19-13 record across levels in 2023 and improved to 9-5 on clay following Sunday’s win.

Juvan had won her first qualifying round on Saturday, beating America’s Jessie Aney 6-2, 6-0.

The world no. 244, who had reached a career high of no. 58 in the world, has seen a sharp decline in the rankings this year owing to her poor form at the tour level.

While Juvan did reach the second round at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, she has either failed to qualify or fallen in the opening round of the other tournaments.

The 22-year-old, however featured in the semifinal of the WTA 125 in San Luis Potosi and also made it to the quarterfinals at ITF La Bisbal.

Facing Juvan is Kristina Kucova, who is 0-2 from her two matches at the top level this season. She lost in the opening round at the Australian and the French Open.

She has not played in any other tour-level event this year but has played quite a few matches at the lower level. While she was a semifinalist at the ITF Trnava, she has struggled in the other lower level tournaments this year

Ranked no. 490, the 33-year-old is 8-11 across levels this year. Last year she had finished with an 8-18 record across levels.

It is due to this poor run of form that she has seen a steady decline in the rankings. The Slovakian player was ranked in the top 100 last year, but has fallen out of the top 400 now.

Can she win her first tour level match of the season on Monday? She is making a comeback in the tournament for the first time since making her debut in 2010 and will look to take away some happy memories with her.
