World no. 68, and the number six seed, Elina Avanesyan, will play Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia, the world number 174,  in the first round of the 2023 Budapest Open on Monday, July 17. The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first match between 20 year old Avanesyan, and her Slovak opponent, who is six years older.

Avanesyan has been making a name for herself on the ITF tour where she has won five titles, all of them on clay, most recently in Germany in May.

And then at the French Open, where she had a stroke of luck, qualifying for the main draw as a Lucky Loser; she went on to reach the fourth round, never having won a Grand Slam match before.

That helped her rise more than 50 places in the world rankings.

Again another piece of good fortune helped her qualify for the German Open, her first WTA 500 event, again as as Lucky Loser, where she beat compatriot and number eight seed Daria Kasatkina.

There was to be no reprieve at Wimbledon though – she was beaten in the second round of qualifying.

Smramkova has been playing on the ITF tour for more than a decade, and has enjoyed a fair degree of success over the years, winning 12 titles and reaching a further five finals.

They have been on a mixture of clay and hard courts.

However, her main tour experience is much more limited, and she has only ever qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam twice, both times losing in the first round.

Her Wimbledon attempt ended in the second round of qualifying, since when she has been on clay in France on the ITF tour, reaching the second round of one event, and falling at the first round stage at another.

This is her first main tour match this year.

Although the younger player, Avanesyan has actually got much more experience of playing on the main tour. If she can replicate the form she showed in Paris, she should have little difficulty against the Slovak,
