After being away from competitive action because of fitness concerns, Moutet has been able to come back following his three-plus month layoff and start winning again.
It’s not been the quickest recovery on the path to victories but Moutet will be reasonably satisfied with his performances following the grass court swing in which he did make the Mallorca Open quarterfinals. He would go on to defeat Richard Gasquet in the first round of Wimbledon before falling to Roman Safiullin too.
This was after he had lost successive opening round matches at Stuttgart and Halle on grass.
Grass hasn’t quite been very high on Moutet’s list of surfaces but it does look this is a different side of things for him. After having featured in a grass court competition each week before Wimbledon and then participating in the year’s third major as well, Moutet will now make his Newport debut – making it his fifth grass court tournament of the season.

Known for his solid performances at the junior level, Spizzirri did not feature as a professional tennis player the whole of last year. It was only in July this year that Spizzirri finally came back to participate in competitive tournaments and as a result of that is currently ranked outside the top 1100.
Featuring in two hardcourt Challenger tournaments, Spizzirri played in opening round matches at both those and did not win a set in either.
It’s probably early days for him too and a wildcard here at the Hall of Fame Open ensures he will get the chance to rub shoulders against some of the higher-ranked players. In turn it would help him improve his game no end but as far as results are concerned, it could be a while before he starts winning against them.
