Zapata Miralles Loses Iasi Challenger Final
Bernabe Zapata Miralles played his best tennis at last week’s Iasi Challenger in Romania, reaching his first final of the season. It was a run that included a gutsy comeback against former top-20 player Cristian Garin in the semis.
But Zapata Miralles, who made a bright start to the final by taking a one-set lead, fell 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 against French lefty Hugo Gaston.
Despite leaving Romania empty-handed, Zapata Miralles will be buoyed by his upturn in fortunes after dropping from his career-high ranking of No. 37 not many weeks back to outside the top 50.
It was the first time this year that he took a decision to play at the Challenger level after a poor defeat to Diego Schwartzman at the French Open – the same tournament Zapata Miralles set the world alight last year with his run to the fourth round.
Although he snapped his five-match losing streak in Iasi, the Spanish baseliner last tasted victory on the main tour in Geneva in May.

Dellien Snaps Losing Streak to Qualify
Hugo Dellien needed to do it the hard way to qualify for the Bastad main draw, ending his six-match winless drought at the weekend. The Bolivian clay courter came from a set and a break down to beat Luca Nardi in the first round of qualifying.
And he needed to show that same level of resilience against a Timofey Skatov – a player Dellien had previously beaten in three sets two seasons ago.
Skatov made a fast start, breaking Dellien and taking a 4-1 lead. But it didn’t take long for Dellien to find his ground game, breaking back to level and then broke again to lead. He served for a 7-5 lead.
The Kazakh raced to another 4-1 lead in the second set, but made sure there would be no such recurrence of lapses in concentration, and eventually closed it out 6-3.
Dellien, however, was the more consistent server and ball striker down the stretch. He served better (won 62% first serves, 83% second serves) and converted two break points to win the set 6-3.
Zapata Miralles v Dellien Prediction and Tip
This will be a close call as both naturally play their best tennis on clay. Zapata Miralles has got his season back on track with that confidence-boosting run to the final at the Iasi Challenger. But it’s a fair question to ask whether he’ll have enough in the tank to beat out-rally Dellien.
