Isner on the Decline

John Isner is quite literally on the decline as the American can’t really play tennis the way he used to. The serve is great as ever, the forehand can do some damage but the years don’t allow him to move as well as he used to.

It’s never been his strength but he did enough to win points and matches. Now it doesn’t look so great as he’s 4-9 on the year with a final run in Dallas as the only saving grace. That was actually the last time he won a match, back on February 11th.

Since then the big-serving American played seven matches and lost all of them which just paints a really clear picture. It’s quite likely that this might be his last year because if he’s not winning, what’s the point of playing? Newport has been a good sport for him over the years.

I think he can break the losing streak here but he’ll need to raise his level.

Bolt Eyeing Sorta Upset?

Alex Bolt will be the underdog against John Isner simply because the American is on home soil at an event in which he played well. Bolt is no slouch on grass though as he holds a 65-30 record on the surface, basically a better one than Isner does.

He’s even better this year with a 5-2 record so far so this will be an interesting match for him. He’s certainly going to eye the win but facing Isner is a very tough thing to do, especially on grass. The season generally has been pretty decent with 23-15.

Bolt is a typical Australian player. He’s got a decent serve, pretty solid from the baseline, moves well but there is nothing special there. He can be quite streaky but which tennis player doesn’t. The win condition will be how he returns.

If he can return the serve well he should be good but if he struggles, then Isner might get it done.

Isner v Bolt Prediction and Tip

It’s a tough one to call because it could be either way but I expect a lot of games. I don’t think Isner will get broken easily and he won’t break easily either.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 5/6
