Cerundolo Gets Opening Bye
A defending champion in this competition, Cerundolo will have fond memories of the 2022 Bastad Open because it’s here he won his maiden ATP title.
He would go on to add a second tournament win earlier this year when he lifted the Eastbourne International trophy in June but he now returns to what is deemed to be most preferred surface – clay.
The Argentine has a 16-10 record on red dirt this season with a final at the Lyon Open and a fourth round appearance at Roland-Garros among his best showings for the year. He should have won that title in Lyon too after he started out a 3/10 favourite against Arthur Fils but suffered a surprise loss there.
Cerundolo enters this match as one of the seeds with an opening round bye and having not played a single clay court encounter since the first week of June, it would be interesting to see how he re-adapts to the surface.

Van Assche Lives Up to Favourite Billing against Dragos Nicolae
Van Assche was a 1/3 favourite against the 191st-ranked and local lad Madaras Dragos Nicolae when the two clashed in their opening round encounter. And while Dragos Nicolae did put up a bit of a fight, Van Assche came through to win in straight sets.
In a match lasting an hour and 48 minutes, Van Assche won 7-6 (2), 6-4 to move into the second round of the event, having done the same at the French Open and Wimbledon in recent times.
A quick exchange of breaks in the first two games of the match took them to 4-4 before Van Assche broke again in the ninth game. Unfortunately for him, he failed to serve out the set and was only able to do so in the tie-breaker.
Dragos Nicolae did not fall apart in the second set either. In fact he broke first and after nine games, it looked like another tie-breaker was in the offing.
Under pressure, however, it was Van Assche who came away the trumps as he got the better of his opponent when he served to stay in the match at 4-5.
Can the world number 77 now put Cerundolo to sword?
Cerundolo v Van Assche Prediction and Tip
Cerundolo might take some time adjusting back to clay but this is his favourite surface and we think it shouldn’t take a lot of time for him to do that. A straight-set win looks likely.
Tips:
- Moderate Risk Tip: Cerundolo to win in straight sets: 5/6
