Mannarino Coming off Solid Grass Showing

While Mannarino did not survive too long at Wimbledon, losing his second round match to Daniil Medvedev, he did put up a strong showing on grass throughout the swing.

In fact he came close to winning his second career title on grass when he reached the final of the Mallorca Open only to be subdued by Christopher Eubanks. At two prior events in Rosmalen and Queen’s, Mannarino had reached the quarterfinal as well which made his win-loss record add up to 8-4 on this surface.

No surprises then that the Frenchman has opted to continue playing here.

Mannarino has come to Newport on nine previous occasions and reached the quarterfinal thrice before this. A win here will help him make it his fourth attempt after having earned a first round bye as a result of his 38th rank.

Can he ward off the young Hijikata challenge?

Hijikata Lives Up To His Favourites Tag against Shelbayh

He was a 9/20 favourite coming up against Jordan’s Abedallah Shelbayh in his opener and Hijikata ensured there would be no surprises.

The Aussie, who featured in three grass court competitions this season – including two on the Challenger circuit – had never won a main draw match on this surface before this.

Which is why a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Shelbayh in this opening round encounter that lasted a little less than an hour and a half, would have done Hijikata’s confidence a world of good.

He faced just one break-point in the entire encounter and saved it easily, while breaking his opponent three times in it. An early break of serve in the third game of the match set the tone as Hijikata would lose only four further points on his own serve after that in that set.

In the second, Hijikata faced that break-point in the ninth game but then turned things around by getting the better of Shelbayh’s serve in the very next game to seal off the encounter.

Can he now put up a fight against Mannarino?
