Alexander Zverev v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head
There have been two previous meetings between them – on the Challenger circuit in 2014 and in 2022 at the Davis Cup. It’s 1-1 with Zverev winning the 2022 match.

It wasn’t the easiest of returns to clay for Zverev who was not only taken to three sets in his first round encounter against Alex Molcan, he also failed to take advantage of being a break up in the decider on two separate occasions.
It took Zverev two hours and 26 minutes and a third break of serve in the third set that allowed Zverev to scrape through and make the second round.
Zverev won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 against a player ranked 81st in the world having entered the tournament on the back of a 13-6 win-loss record on clay.
With the German having returned to the circuit this season following an injury-ridden absence last year, he took his time to turn things around in 2023. It was at the French Open that he finally looked to have come into his own when he made the semifinal there.

Monteiro Registers Comeback Win over Galan
It took Monteiro nearly three hours to overcome Daniel Elahi Galan’s favourite odds and make it to the second round.
The world number 122 did not face a single break-point in the first set till the 12th game but the first time he fell behind 30-40, he was broken and he lost the set!
Following this Monteiro retaliated with a break of serve in the fifth game of the second set before wrapping it up and then went 2-0 up in the decider.
Galan managed to make a comeback with a break of serve in the fourth game and till 3-3 in the decider, it looked lie things could have gone either way. A break-point in the seventh was all that Monteiro needed to get past his opponent’s serve and from then onward, he dropped just two points on his own serve to carve out the win.
Monteiro had last won successive matches in a tournament in Santiago in the first week of March. He will be hoping to make it a second time here.
