Coria Wins An Epic Against Baez

In a meeting between two Argentinetes and former finalists of the Bastad Open, it was Federico Coria, the 31-year-old from Rosario who pulled off one of the most surprising results of the day.

Coria upset Sebastian Baez 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) in two hours and 51 minutes. The match itself felt like a tug of war, and Coria, winless in three matches, ended his recent drought, saving a break point late in the third set and rallied from 3-0 down in the final set tiebreak to win.

Coria won a topsy-turvy first set that featured no fewer than five breaks, with three going his way.

Baez, however, responded and was much more composed in the second set, breaking Coria for a 3-2 lead and kept consolidating until the final game of the set, where he navigated a 0-40 hold, and saved five break points in total to level the match.

The last time these two players battled was in the Cordoba final this season, and that one went the full distance, with Baez emerging victorious.

The third set began with both players relinquishing their first two service games, but normalcy settled in from there on, and Coria saved a break point at 5-5 before winning the match in a tiebreak.

Borg Secures Maiden ATP Win

Leo Borg won an all-Swedish affair against Elias Ymer, 7-6, 6-3, for his first ATP win. And 40 years since his father Bjorn featured on the winner’s list, Leo will now join him too.

The 20-year-old will now attempt to follow in his father’s footsteps and reach the quarterfinals in Bastad, something the legendary Bjorn accomplished as a 16-year-old.

A marathon first set lasted an hour and 13 minutes. Leo Borg withstood 10 aces and rallied from 5-3 down to win it 7-5.

Despite Elias Ymer sitting almost 300 spots above Leo Borg in rankings and being a more experienced player on the pro tour, he couldn’t sort his return game to break Borg more often.

It could have been a psychological effect of his brother’s recent revelation that he was suspended for breaking anti-doping rules. And Borg broke Ymer’s serve at the start of the second set to take a 3-0 lead.

With such a huge cushion the young Swede did not relinquish it, and he sealed the win with a love hold by firing an ace on match point.

Coria v Borg Prediction and Tip

Borg has been restricted to a handful of appearances on the Challengers and has predominantly featured on the ITF this year. Federico Coria will be a massive step up here and it is unlikely Leo will follow his father’s footsteps by reaching the quarters in Bastad.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Coria to win: 8/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Coria to win in straight sets: 6/4
