Isner Scrapes Past Bolt

Not so long ago, Isner was ranked eighth in the world. Today, he is outside the top 120 and that has been thanks to the lack of wins – as it always the case.

More vitally in Isner’s case, it has looked like he has forgotten winning.

Since reaching the final of the Dallas Open earlier this in February, Isner has done nothing of note. More appropriately, he has won nothing.

That’s right. Before coming into this tournament, Isner had played seven matches and lost every single one of them. The surface didn’t matter at all, he lost on hardcourt surfaces, clay and grass.

Which is why despite taking on a player ranked 345th in the world in his opener, Isner was just a 3/5 favourite to finally clinch a win. And he took his time doing that.

Isner overcame Alex Bolt 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in the first round, needing nearly two hours to come through. What was rather surprising to note is he lost his serve twice after facing three break-points.

Which is why it isn’t much of a surprise there aren’t any clear favourites here.

Moutet Shrugs off Slow Start against Spizzirri

It wasn’t expected to be much of a challenge for Moutet when he took to court against Eliot Spizzirri in his opener.

Moutet was coming off a quarterfinal appearance on the grass courts of Mallorca and had a second round showing at Wimbledon and playing an opponent who had played his first set of matches for the season in July.

Which is why the Frenchman started off a 1/17 favourite and was expected to cruise through against Spizzirri.

Things almost went awry for Moutet though. He was a break up in the opening set but he failed to serve it out in the 10th game, missing out on two set-points while serving for the set at 5-4. And in the tie-breaker that followed, Moutet faced a set-point against him too.

Once he had come back to clinch the tie-breaker 9-7, Moutet went on to bagel Spizzirri in the second to clinch his second round spot.

He now faces a struggling Isner and will give himself a chance to overcome the American.
