Simona Halep v Venus Williams Head to Head
The two ladies have met each other six times on the tour and the head to head tally is currently tied at 3-3. Halep has won their last three meetings, with the most recent one being the third round fixture in the Australian Open earlier this season.
Halep won that match comfortably, defeating Venus 6-2, 6-3.
A Chance for Venus to Make History in Miami
Miami Open is one of the few Premier tournaments that Venus has won multiple times. She has won the tournament thrice, with her very first win coming two decades ago.
In these 20 years, a lot has changed on the WTA Tour but Venus’ love for tennis is one thing that has always remained the same. At 38 years of age, she is still playing some high-level tennis and continues to give the top guns a run for their money.
At the same time, however, she has had her tryst with form struggles as she spent most of the previous year attempting to overcome those losing spells. In the season so far, she has been quite good but is yet to win a title.
At the WTA Indian Wells, she reached the quarterfinal where she lost to Angelique Kerber – her second such showing this year.
As for her performance in Miami, she started on a similar note with easy wins over Dalila Jakupovic and Carla Suarez Navarro. She then dispatched Daria Kasatkina in the third round with a clinical 6-3, 6-1 win.
Can Halep Defeat Venus Yet Again?
Halep’s performance in Miami has been quite good, as she defeated the likes of Taylor Townsend and Polona Hercog with ease. She faces her first real test in the tournament against Venus and it will be interesting to see how she fares here. It is also worth noting that she is now playing under the guidance of a new coach.
Halep has had a pretty average year so far and most of it, in all fairness, can be attributed to her experiment with playing with or without a coach. The Romanian started the year without one and had a rather disappointing run in the Australian Open Series.
She then reached the final in Doha with a new coach although, she parted ways with him shortly after that loss in the final. In Dubai and Indian Wells after that, she reached the fourth round losing respectively to Belinda Bencic and Marketa Vondrousova. Once again, she played in these two events by herself.
Halep v Williams Predictions & Tips
This is an evenly matched fixture that can very well go either way. On one hand, Williams is backed by 49 singles titles while Halep is coming in strong with a fairly better form. However, Venus’ track record in Miami is much better than Halep’s – the American has reached the quarterfinal and beyond in three of her last four appearances, and has a superior winning rate.
It is also a wonderful opportunity for Williams to avenge her Australian Open defeat. Expect this one to be an entertaining fixture where Venus will start as the favourite of the fans while Halep will be the bookmakers’ choice.
Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 17/20 (Unibet)
