Wawrinka Aided by Carballes Baena Retirement

It took Wawrinka only 41 minutes of court-time to make it through to the second round after his opponent Roberto Carballes Baena retired from the encounter because of a neck injury. At that point, Wawrinka was leading 6-1, 3-1 in their opener.

The Swiss player, who had last played in this tournament in 2013 and made the quarterfinal here, now has a chance of duplicating that result a decade on as he takes on a player who is struggling even more than he has been on tour.

Wawrinka, who made the third round recently at Wimbledon, was 4-5 on clay before this tournament, having not won successive matches on this surface in the entire season. This will be a good chance for him to make it his first time, and in the process improve his ranking even further.

Currently 69th on the live rankings, he could jump up five more places with a win here.

Munar Registers First Clay Win Since Madrid

Munar had a brilliant run at the Madrid Masters after having made the semifinal at the Santiago Open earlier this year. He made the fourth round there before going down to Daniel Altmaier.

Since then, however, Munar has struggled to get going. First round defeats at the Rome Masters and the French Open, on a surface that’s his favourite, meant that Munar opted to continue playing on clay on the Challenger circuit.

He won four of the seven matches on that circuit before a shock win over John Isner in the first round at Wimbledon might have given him some respite.

Since then, however, he had won nothing and a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Alexander Ritschard would have been of great help. In a match lasting a mere hour and 16 minutes, Munar faced just one break-point – and was broken there – and overcame his opponent’s serve on four occasions.

Can he lift his game against Wawrinka the way he had in the first round?

Wawrinka v Munar Prediction and Tip

If Munar can play to the level he did in the first round, we could have a very intriguing second round match here that goes to the third set.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
