French Open Runner-up Ruud Returns to Favourite Surface

It’s been a very up and down season for Ruud but the good news is that he hasn’t fallen off the cliff as far as his rankings are concerned.

Having hit a career-best of number two last year, Ruud is still the fourth in the world and that’s thanks to his French Open final run after having done the same last season too.

Usually known to win a plethora of clay-court tournaments in recent years, Ruud’s just clinched one this year. That was after he opted not to feature in the South American clay swing and then struggled to make things count at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Masters.

He finally blitzed into the semifinal of the Rome Masters before that French Open run.

Shevchenko Blasts Cerundolo Away

In a match in which Shevchenko had started off an 11/10 underdog, he did not waste a lot of time getting past Juan Manuel Cerundolo and sealing his first main draw win since the French Open in May.

Shevchenko, who was on a four-match losing streak coming into this tournament, needed just an hour and 17 minutes of court time to get past Cerundolo. He won 6-3, 6-3 in a match that was filled with breaks of serves.

The pair exchanged breaks of serves in the first six games of the match before Shevchenko ran away with the set by breaking his opponent two times in a row.

A similar script repeated in the second set when Shevchenko went a break up in the second game, only to lose his serve in the next game. In the fourth game, however, Shevchenko registered a decisive break that helped him come away a winner.

Ruud will be a different kettle of fish though.

Ruud v Shevchenko Prediction and Tip

Ruud has played just two matches since the end of the French Open and that would have given him some time to not just reflect on his on-court performances but also look at the future of the season. We think he will come back strongly in the second half of the season starting with a straight-set win here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruud to win in straight sets: 1/2
