Avanesyan Battles Past Šramková
World no. 69 Elina Avanesyan overcame a slow start to beat Rebecca Šramková in the first round of the Budapest Open on Monday.
Seeded number sixth in the tournament, Avanesyan was outplayed by the world no. 171 in the first set. She also found herself a break down in the second before beginning to turn things around. Avanesyan showed nerves while serving for the second set at 3-5. The Russian missed out on five set points as Šramková broke to make it 4-5. Avanesyan, however, broke back in the next game to send the match into the final set.
Šramková started the third with a break, but the Russian took charge of the contest from that point on and didn’t look back as she won the two hour and 26 minute match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The last couple of months have been pretty good for the Russian. She went on to reach the fourth round of the French Open after entering the main draw as a lucky loser. She also reached the quarterfinals in Berlin after making the main draw as a lucky loser.
Overall she is 26-16 across levels this year and will be hoping to reach her second tour-level quarterfinal of the season on Thursday.

Bondar Holds Off Babos
Anna Bondar held off Tímea Babos in a three-set opening round contest on Tuesday.
The Hungarian, ranked no. 144th in the world, bounced back from 1-5 down in the first set to win it 7-5. Bondar saved four set points in the set and won six games in a row to take the opening set. But just when one thought the momentum had shifted towards the Bondar, Babos made a comeback in the second set. She came back from a break down twice, before getting the decisive third break late in the set, which tied the match at one set apiece.
In the final set, Bondar got the only break in the eighth game before securing a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory in close to three hours.
A home favourite, Bondar was a semifinalist in the tournament last year. She has not been in the best of form this year and Tuesday’s win had ended a five-match losing streak for the Hungarian.
Can she reach her first quarterfinal of the season on Thursday?
Avanesyan v Bondar Prediction and Tip
