There have been six previous meetings between these two players and Mannarino leads 4-2. On grass, it’s 2-1 in favour of Mannarino but they had faced off more recently in 2023 in Rosmalen and Thompson had won that grass court encounter.

Having received a first round bye, Mannarino did not spend a lot of time on court as he took down Australia’s Rinky Hijikata in the second round.
Mannarino used up an hour and 47 minutes for his 6-3, 6-4 drubbing of Hijikata as he improved to 9-4 on grass for the year.
The 35-year-old veteran broke Hijikata twice in the first set but then went on a four-game spree in which both players lost their serves twice. Mannarino then held on to his serve but serving to stay in the match at 4-5, Hijikata was broken for the third time in a row.

After routing Alexander Kovacevic 6-0, 6-1 in the first match he played in Newport, Thompson needed a mere hour and 15 minutes to register a 6-2, 6-2 win over Liam Broady to take one step closer to his previous best showing at Newport. He was a semifinalist in 2021 here.
The seventh seed faced no break-point in the entire match while breaking his opponent on two occasions in both the sets to seal off his quarterfinal berth.
These two wins come on the back of Thompson’s solid showing for the season on grass where he had made the final of the Rosmalen Open and won a round apiece at Queen’s, Mallorca and Wimbledon.
He now faces a player who has been in an equally brilliant form on grass this season and will hope to put up a keen fight.
