Humbert Goes Past Johnson

After getting a first round bye, Humbert was on court for nearly an hour and a half in overcoming Steve Johnson in the second round. Humbert won 6-4, 6-4.

Johnson saved a couple of break-points in the first set but Humbert then went 40-0 ahead in the seventh game before breaking his opponent off his third break-point. That was all he needed to take the lead in the match.

In the second set, however, Humbert went 3-1 down and it looked like the match could go anywhere from that point onward. The very next game, however, saw a change in fortunes for him as the Frenchman broke right back before levelling it out at 3-3.

He saved three break-points in the eighth game and then off the third break-point on the ninth, went 5-4 up. Soon after, he served out the match to seal his second quarterfinal spot at this tournament.

Can Humbert now emulate what he had done in 2019 by reaching the semifinal here?

Anderson Continues Comeback Trail

Playing in his first tournament since announcing his retirement early last year, Anderson has done to win successive matches in straight sets to make it to the quarterfinal.

The South African and former Wimbledon finalist followed up his first round win over Gabriel Diallo with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over Gijs Brouwer in the second round to make it back to back victories.

Anderson was on court for an hour and 47 minutes in which he saved all seven of the break-points he faced while breaking his opponent just once from the seven chances he had. That break of serve came in the eighth game of the first set, following which Anderson clinched the set.

In the second set, neither player got the better of the other’s serve with both winning 74% of their first serves. It was in a neck-in-neck tie-breaker that Anderson grabbed the win off his second match-point.

The South African veteran now faces his most difficult encounter of the tournament but we can expect him to give it a good shot.

Humbert v Anderson Prediction and Tip

Anderson will hope to continue winning but it must be added that he hasn’t played competitive tennis in a while and will be playing his third match in four days. That might play a part here and as a result we will go with Humbert to win this.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Humbert to win: 4/6
