Hanfmann Scrapes Past Altmaier

After getting a first round bye, Hanfmann took his time in the second round before edging pasting Daniel Altmaier in a match lasting two hours and 25 minutes.

Hanfmann came back from a set down to level things out easily but in the final set he failed to take advantage of a break of serve in the fifth game. Broken back in the sixth, the match looked evenly poised when at 5-5 in the decider.

It was at this stage that Hanfmann look advantage of a nervy Altmaier as he overcame his opponent’s serve off the second opportunity he got – it was his fifth break of serve in the match – and then served it out to claim the round.

With the kind of form that Hanfmann has shown all season on clay, having reached the quarterfinal at the Rome Masters and the semifinal at the Houston Open, he will be in line to clinch another last-four berth here.

Medjedovic Shocks Thiem

Despite starting out as a 7/5 outsider in his second round match against Dominic Thiem, Medjedovic edged past the former US Open winner to seal his quarterfinal berth.

The Serbian qualifier had earlier needed three sets to go past Zhizhen Zhang in his opener and overcame a poor second set showing against Thiem to stamp his mark on the match.

Medjedovic won 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in a match lasting two hours and 15 minutes to make the last eight stage.

Interestingly, both players lost their serves twice apiece but it was Medjedovic who shone when it mattered. And that happened in the deciding set when he took a 3-0 lead and then came back from 0-40 down in the ninth game, saving four break-points and winning it.

Can he deliver something similar against Hanfmann?
