Tommy Paul had a rather simple start at the event taking on 19-year-old Ethan Quinn and beating him 6-4 6-2. Paul was heavily favoured in that one and he took care of business like many expected him. It’s been a solid year, a really solid one with 30 wins and only 16 losses.
Starting off well in Australia was key for his confidence and while he’s still very up and down, the American does seem to find consistency more often than not. He’s been pretty solid on grass with a 9-4 record so far as well.
Paul never beat Isner on a tennis court but they also played only twice. The last time they played was three years ago and things changed since then. Isner is not as good as he was while Paul became a more consistent and dangerous player.
I think this is a match that Paul should and will win.

Isner Winning Again
Before winning in the opening round of the Newport Open, Isner’s last win came at the start of the year at the Dallas Open. The date was the 11th of February so he basically went six months without winning a single match. Winning in Newport wasn’t a surprise as he’s been spectacular over the years here.
In the first one, Isner defeated Alex Bolt 6-4 2-6 6-3 which was a huge win considering how good Bolt is on grass as well. He then followed that up by taking advantage of a very nervous Corentin Moutet beating him in straight sets 6-3 6-4.
Paul is prone to being nervous himself and while I do think Isner will have chances to win the match, the shot-making of Paul will make it very hard for the American veteran.
He will need to put out a serving clinic in order to have a chance but hey, he’s one of the rare players that he’s capable of doing that so anything could happen.
