After easing past Finland’s Otto Virtanen in straight sets in the first round, Juan Pablo Varillas scored another straight forward win on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open.

Varillas dropped just nine points of his serve in the second round contest to beat Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 6-1.

The Peruvian, ranked no. 66th in the world, was not broken in the match as he saved both the break points that he faced. Meanwhile he had 11 chances to break the Argentine’s serve and he capitalised on five of them to seal victory in an hour and 13 minutes.

Varillas wasn’t broken in the first round either. In fact he didn’t even face a break point in the opening round as he handed Virtanen a 6-2, 6-3 thrashing.

A semifinalist in Buenos Aires earlier this year, the 27-year-old clay court specialist is looking to reach a second tour level semifinal of the season. He is 21-14 across levels this year and that includes a 19-14 record on clay. He had also made it to the round of 16 at the French Open and was a finalist in a Challenger tournament earlier this year.

Last year, he was beaten in the quarterfinals by Dominic Thiem, can he make it to the last four this year?

Ramos-Vinolas Takes Down Third Seed

2019 champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas has never fallen before the quarterfinal stage at the Swiss Open in Gstaad and he has kept that record intact this year as the Spaniard knocked out third seed Lorenzo Sonego in the second round on Thursday.

The Spaniard, ranked no. 79th in the world, got the only break of the first set, while Sonego got the solitary break of the second. Both players then remained on serve over the first nine games of the final set, before Ramos-Vinolas got the decisive break in the 10th game to secure a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory.

It was a second straight three-set win for the lefty and also the second straight win over an Italian. Ramos-Vonolas had begun his campaign with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win over Fabio Fognini.

The 35-year-old who has been off-colour for most parts of the season, improved to 14-24 across levels and 14-16 on clay in 2023.

He was a semifinalist in Cordoba and will be looking to reach the final four for the second time this year. Ramos-Vinolas had lost in the semifinals last year. This is his fourth quarterfinal in Gstaad in his fourth appearance, can he return to the final four stage?
