For the second time in Palermo, Jasmine Paolini proved the ultimate roadblock for Daria Kasatkina. Like in 2020, the Russian’s journey came to a screeching halt, this time in a thrilling three-setter in front of a packed crowd on centre court.
Paolini won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 26 minutes of riveting action, in a seesaw match that ebbed and flowed until Paolini caught fire in the final stretch to end the top seed’s run.
There were massive momentum swings throughout the match. In total, neither player looked comfortable serving. There were 13 breaks in the match, with Paolini accounting for seven of those.
The World No. 52’s brave resistance appeared to have hit buffers, when she trailed 1-3, 0-40, but Kasatkina’s inability to garner an insurance break proved costly. Paolini held in that game and finished on a flourish winning five straight games.
It’s Paolini’s second semifinal in Palermo, following on from her exploits 12 months ago. But can she reach her first final of the season?

Sorribes Tormo Helds Off Burel
Sara Sorribes Tormo was first to book her place in the quarterfinals of the Palermo Ladies Open with a 6-1, 7-6 win over France World No. 94 Clara Burel.
Burel was just not at the races as the first set flashed by very quickly. She managed to hold once in four service games as Sorribes Tormo won 75% second-serve return points.
The second set was the complete opposite of the first as Burel raised her game and Sorribes Tormo’s fell off drastically.
Both players exchanged two breaks in set 2, and Sorribes Tromo bravely saved a break point at 5-5, which would have put the set on Burel’s racket.
That proved decisive as the Spaniard went on to win the second set tiebreak, by saving two set points from 4-6 down to win it 8-6.
Paolini vs Sorribes Tormo Prediction and Tip
This is a big moment fro Paolini who is the city’s best hope for a home champion – a first since 2013. But she won’t be getting carried away just yet. Should Paolini reprise some of her silky hand skills here, she can truly unsettle Sorribes Tormo.
