Mannarino Makes it 10-4 on Grass

Mannarino wasn’t the favourite going into his quarterfinal match against Jordan Thompson, a player who had done well on grass all season.

We had expected it to be a gruelling battle and that’s exactly how it turned out to be with Mannarino coming through in the end, in a match lasting two hours and 46 minutes –  one of the longer three-setters on grass.

Things looked to be going Mannarino’s way when he broke his opponent thrice in the first set and lost just five points on his own serve.

And when he followed that bagel with an early break – a fourth in the a row – the writing was on the wall. Except that Thompson managed to come back from 2-5 down to break his opponent twice and then win the set in a tie-breaker.

A shocked Mannarino could have crashed out at this stage but his experience proved to be his saviour as he broke Thompson twice to wrap it up. It was Mannarino’s 10th win on grass for the season – the joint-best of a season for his career.

Humbert Ends Kevin Anderson’s Run

Kevin Anderson was returning to the circuit after being retired from more than a year. And he had done well to win successive matches to reach the quarterfinal.

Humbert, however, proved to be too strong for the former Wimbledon finalist, as he carved out a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anderson.

Having ousted Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 in the second round following an opening bye, Humbert was on court for a mere hour and 35 minutes to earn himself his spot in the semifinal.

What would please Humbert no end is he managed to break Anderson’s serve four times – an aspect of the South African’s game that has been the cause for concern for many an opponent when in his prime.

Can Humbert make it to his first final of the season?
