Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Pedro Cachin Head to Head

While they have never faced off at the highest level, the two played each other on the Futures circuit and the Challengers with both those matches having come in 2017. Fokina won them both.

Fokina Loses in Bastad Opener

Returning to clay following an 8-6 record on it in the first half of the season, Fokina did not have the greatest of starts to it at Bastad.

The world number 35 was up against the 5/1 underdog Jozef Kovalik in his opener there and not only did he go down, he also did that in a lot of hurry.

Fokina lasted a little over an hour in his 6-3, 6-4 defeat to the 159th-ranked opponent and he would like to turn things around here in Hamburg.

The Spaniard has featured twice in this tournament before this, with his quarterfinal appearance in this tournament last season being his best showing. He will now be looking to do both, shrug off his showing last week and emulate his best-ever performance at this competition.

The trouble is, he will be up against a player coming off his best showing on the ATP circuit.

Cachin Makes Gstaad Final

In the same week Fokina lost his opener in Bastad, Cachin was making airwaves in Gstaad.

The Argentine, who had fallen to 90th in the world before the start of the previous week, overcame odds in two of the four matches he featured in, in that tournament to make it to the final.

Cachin, who had never entered the final in an ATP event, shocked Roberto Bautista-Agut and Jaume Munar in successive matches before getting past Hamad Medjedovic to set up a meeting with Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the title-deciding round.

At the time of writing, his final is yet to be played but whatever is the result of that encounter, Cachin will break into the top 70 at the very least. Can he start things off against Fokina with a win too?

Fokina v Cachin Prediction and Tip

While Cachin’s momentum could inspire him to greater heights in the rest of the season, the question here is if he will have enough turnaround time to win a sixth game in a row in eight days against a high-quality player.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Fokina to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
