Popyrin Returns to Clay after French Open Opening Loss

For a player not the most fond of clay, Popyrin’s performance on this surface this season hasn’t been very under-par.

Sure, he was ousted from the French Open in the very first round and by an opponent in Aslan Karatsev he would have believed it was someone he could have beaten.

That aside, however, Popyrin has kept nudging away opponents and even managed to reach the fourth round at the Rome Masters after having started out as a qualifier. A win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in that encounter would have been a great confidence-booster.

What the Aussie will now hope for is to live up to his favourites odds in this encounter against a player who has fallen off the top 100 ranking in the world at the moment.

Bonzi on a Five-Match Losing Streak

Bonzi looked to have done well to reach the final of the Marseille Open earlier this year and then moving to clay he made the second round at the Marrakesh Open. He followed that up with another opening win over Bernabe Zapata Miralles at Monte-Carlo despite starting out a 7/4 underdog in that match.

And then things have gone kaput since then.

A wrist injury in the first set of his second round match there against Stefanos Tsitsipas ended his stay in that tournament and since then Bonzi has won nothing.

He was forced to miss the rest of the clay court swing which included the French Open and even on his comeback to grass, Bonzi lost three successive matches in straight sets. The Frenchman then returned to clay at Gstaad last week, only to go down in two sets to Daniel Altmaier in the opener.

Can he turn things around here?

Popyrin v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Popyrin will be a favourite here and given Bonzi’s form, it does look like the Aussie should clinch this in two.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Popyrin to win: 13/20
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
