Novak Djokovic v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

There have been nine previous meetings between Djokovic and Bautista-Agut with the Serbian world number one enjoying a healthy 7-2 win-loss record against his opponent. However, here’s the catch. Over the last two times these two players have met each other, the record is 2-2 with Bautista-Agut having defeated Djokovic as recently as the Doha Open earlier this year.

That loss has been Djokovic’s one of only two losses so far this season.

Djokovic Not at His Best but Chugging on

It hasn’t been the happiest past couple of weeks or so for Djokovic. First he was dumped out of the third round at the Indian Wells Masters and then he has been stretched to a three-setter in his third round match against Federico Delbonis here at the Miami Masters.

Djokovic acknowledged the two players were very close at the start of the final set in his previous round but he finally leapt away and complete a 6-1 win in the final set against the Argentine. What was interesting, however, to see was a sense of frustration for the Serb who led by a set and 3-1 in the second set against Delbonis.

And then he dropped his service games twice in a row to allow his opponent to come back into the encounter.

Before his Australian Open win, he had gone down to Bautista-Agut in the semi-final as well, losing the final set 6-4, despite being an overwhelming favourite in that one. Can he keep those episodes of loss of focus or struggles at bay though?

Can Bautista-Agut Make it Two in Two?

After back to back fourth round appearances at this competition in Miami, Bautista-Agut missed out on that spot last year before coming back strongly this season to enter the last 16 again. In doing so, after receiving a first round bye, Bautista-Agut defeated Janko Tipsarevic and Fabio Fognini in straight sets to make it there and will now face a real challenge in the form of the world number one.

But it’s not a challenge he will shy away from given he has already defeat Djokovic in Doha earlier this year. And while there were early exits at Sofia, Dubai and the Indian Wells Masters, he has also won that tournament in Doha, defeating Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych on other side of that Djokovic win.

And if that wasn’t enough to send a warning to Djokovic, the Spaniard beaten Andy Murray, Karen Khachanov and Marin Cilic on his way to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open. Can he make it two in two against Djokovic now?
