The Pune Open was played in the first week of this season. Cilic had a first round bye there, won his second round against Roberto Carballes Baena before opting to withdraw from the tournament.
Since then, Cilic hasn’t taken to court. The 34-year-old suffered a knee injury that forced him out of competitive tennis for six months.
He had earlier updated his fans in June that his knee was in good shape, having earlier said he was going to feature in Rosmalen. Unfortunately for him, the Croat opted to take further time out before returning to tennis and as a result of that missed Wimbledon as well.
Here he is, returning to feature in his home tournament in Umag, a competition he has won once, reached the final one other time and was a semifinalist in 2014. That was also the last time he played here.

Cobolli Gets a Rare Main Draw Opportunity
Every now and then, this season, Cobolli has been in and around the main draws of competitions and this tournament in Umag has been no different with the Italian making it through as a qualifier.
Cobolli, whose top ranking on the ATP circuit has been 133rd, eased past Luca Nardi and Zdenek Kolar in successive matches to enter the main draw here.
This follows his performances in three successive tournaments on the Challenger circuit in which he won six of the nine matches he played.
His best performance, however, came at the Munich Open where he qualified to the first round and then defeated Jordan Thompson and Oscar Otte to enter the last eight stage. He could have gone one better too but a close, three-setter thriller against Christopher O’Connell ended his run.
