Emma Navarro v Leolia Jeanjean Preview

Head-to-Head: Navarro leads 1-0 (Monterrey 2023)

Emma Navarro has established herself as one of the best clay players in the world posting a 32-9 record on the surface so far this year. She’s been steadily improving for a while and is likely headed to a very high ranking in the future, especially if she keeps playing the way she does.

Jeanjean is a late bloomer who found her breakout last year at Roland Garros and since then proved to belong. She’s not a talent for the top of tennis as her 12-14 record this year proves. Clay is her best surface by far so she enjoys playing on it though it will be tough against Navarro.

The American is a far better player and has been playing better recently which means that she’ll likely win easily. They played on hard and Navarro won in two sets so I don’t see why she won’t do the same on her best surface.

Navarro v Jeanjean Tip

Navarro to win in two ses: 3/6

Sara Sorribes Tormo v Susan Bandecchi Preview

Head-to-Head: This will be their first match.

Sara Sorribes Tormo is a very tough player to play against with her physical playstyle and long rallies. She’s one of the most cerebral players on Tour with a keen preference for clay and her 15-8 record certainly proves that. Their recent form hasn’t been the best but she bounced back with a run to the semi-finals in Palermo. Jasmine Paolini ended her run 7-6(6) 6-0.

Susan Bandecchi is a very interesting player in her own regard but she’s not on the level of the Spaniard. She’s ranked 454 and while she’s certainly better than that I don’t see what she can do on clay against Sorribes Tormo. Her form hasn’t been that great either so this is likely headed for a rather easy defeat.

There is just too much experience on the side of the Spaniard and Bandecchi doesn’t have the precise hard-hitting style you need to break down her opponent.

Lucia Bronzetti v Tamara Zidansek Preview

Head-to-Head: They played once in 2021 and Zidansek won that match.

Lucia Bronzetti has been playing some super solid tennis this year with an overall score of 20-20 though clay has been her best surface. The Italian has a very aggressive style that can work well but also gets her in trouble often. She breaks often and gets broken even more times so her matches end up being rollercoasters that can go either way.

Zidansek plays very similarly as she’s a very streaky player with a propensity to play aggressive tennis. It’s worked pretty well so far this year with a score of 26-18 and like her opponent, the Slovenian plays best on clay. She’s 13-7 on clay this year and defeated Bronzetti on clay in their only match so far.

It happened here in Lausanne where they’ll meet once more. Recent form favours Zidansek a bit more and clay prowess does too. It’s likely going to be a close one that goes to three sets but I do think Zidansek will get it done.

Celine Naef v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Preview

Head-to-Head: This will be their first meeting.

Celine Naef spend much of this year playing on the ITF Tour and it’s been a good decision as she built some good confidence that she hopes to translate to the top level. She’s back home in Switzerland with a chance to do some damage but it will be tough.

The score is 33-12 overall but only 12-8 on clay. It’s a solid surface but arguably not her best. That’s not the case for Cocciaretto who plays her best tennis on clay. She’s 19-14 this year but 9-4 on clay. The Italian hasn’t played that much this year but when she did, she was more than solid.

This promises to be a very close one though Naef is on a 4-match losing streak with some pretty poor play overall. Cocciaretto played in Palermo last week but lost to Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3 4-6 6-0. Neither are impressive but I feel like the Italian is playing a bit better.

Naef v Cocciaretto Tip

Cocciaretto to win: 2/5
