Ruud Coming off Bastad Final

Having featured in only one tournament all season on grass, Ruud returned to feature on clay last week with his appearance at the Bastad Open.

And the world number four did what was expected off him, reaching the final of the Bastad Open.

After getting a first round bye, Ruud defeated Alexander Shevchenko, Sebastian Ofner and Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to enter the final. There he met his match in Andrey Rublev against whom Ruud managed to put up a fight in the first set but was then bagelled in the second.

That made it 20-7 for Ruud on clay for the season after having missed the South American clay swing earlier this year.

Ruud now enters the Hamburg Open, a tournament in which he has never made past the semifinal. He would like to turn that around but starters he has a tricky opening challenge here.

Baez Feeling the Pressure on Clay?

It was in the last week of July last year, nearly a year ago that Baez hit his career-best ranking of 31st in the world.

A year on, Baez’s struggles on his favourite surface, clay, have pushed him down to 64th on the ATP charts and in more recent times, the Argentine has been gasping for victories.

Look at his overall record for the season and Baez has won a mere 18 matches in 2023 to go with his 19 defeats. This is much better on clay but even then a 16-12 record isn’t something that Baez would have liked.

In his three most recent matches on clay, Baez has lost them all. A shock loss to Gael Monfils at the French Open was followed by another opening defeat in Bastad last week too.

And this is why it’s no surprise that despite Baez’s talent, he is starting off a 3/1 outsider in his opener here.

Ruud v Baez Prediction and Tip

Ruud has shown he can manage players outside the top 10 without a lot of trouble on clay and that’s what can be expected out of him here too. A straight-set win plunging Baez further into difficulties.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Ruud to win in straight sets: 4/5
