Cerundolo Coming off Bastad Semifinal

After having shown the world he’s no one-trick pony when he won the title at the Eastbourne International earlier this month, Cerundolo returned to his favourite surface last week at the Bastad Open.

The Argentine got a first round bye before crushing Luca Van Assche and Federico Coria in the following two matches to reach the semifinal. There he met the eventual winner Andrey Rublev, whom he pushed and jostled with but in the end came away second in the contest.

Cerundolo took Rublev to three sets in that match, of which two were tie-breakers, before going down to the Russian.

As a result of that showing he climbed to 21st on the ATP charts and will now hope he can fly further, getting past his career-best of 18th in the world.

First up here is a tricky opponent, but one he has beaten before.

Hanfmann at Career-Best

In February this season, Hanfmann’s ranking had dropped to 153rd in the world. Fast forward to less than five months and he has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career and as a result of that, enters this tournament ranked 45th – his career-best.

Hanfmann’s performances this season have revolved around clay with the German having made the semifinal at the Houston Open and the quarterfinals of the Rome Masters.

Not to mention, he has overcome the likes of Taylor Fritz, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas this season so far.

The win over the last of those aforementioned names came at Wimbledon too, which, at the expense of repetition in this piece, showed that he can multiple feathers to his hat and that clay isn’t his only go-to surface.

It’s his ability to get the better of top players that makes this opening contest a delicious one.
