Cressy Continues to Plummet on the Rankings Charts

Not too long ago this season, Cressy was ranked 34th in the world. This was three short of his career-best ranking.

As he enters this tournament in Atlanta, Cressy has fallen to outside the top 100 as he suffers one of his worst streaks of results in any of his seasons playing tennis at the highest level.

The 26-year-old has featured in 26 matches this year and won just eight of them but making matters worse is that five of those wins came in the first eight matches of the year. Since then, in the five months that have followed Cressy has added just three wins to his name.

Just last week he added another defeat though. A first round loss to this very opponent who went on to then make the final of the tournament and improve to 140th in the world.

Can Cressy now stall two momentums – one of his own hurtling down the rankings chart and the other of his own opponent who has won nine of his last 10 matches?

Michelsen Stunning in Newport

At just 18 years of age, Michelsen has properly shown why American is alive and kicking again. There have been a few other names this season who have led the charge at various other tournaments for USA and Michelsen became yet another name to that list when he shocked the world to reach the final of the Atlanta Open.

Having won the Chicago Challenger the week before that on hardcourt surfaces, Michelsen overcame Cressy, James Duckworth, Mackenzie McDonald and John Isner to make it to the final.

And while he went down to Adrian Mannarino there, it meant that Michelsen had won nine matches in a row in a span of 12 days of tennis.

He will now face the same opponent whom he had defeated a week ago and will start off with the kind of confidence that means he is 1/1 to win this. A week ago he was 8/5 odds to overcome Cressy.

Cressy v Michelsen Prediction and Tip

This could be a good match to take a contrarian call. It’s been some time since Cressy won a match and we believe he will turn things around at some point. It could be this match or the next or the one after that but given Michelsen has played the amount of tennis he is not used to, we think there could be a sense of exhaustion here and Cressy could take advantage of that.

  • Low Risk Tip: Cressy to win: 8/11
