Fokina Comes Back to Overcome Cachin
Fokina needed to fight hard in every possible way before he managed to overcome clay-court specialist Pedro Cachin in the first round of the competition.
Down a set and unable to break past Cachin’s serve in the first 10 games of the second, it looked like Fokina was running out of ideas. In fact till that point in the encounter, Fokina had faced seven break-points and got not a single one in return.
It was in the 11th game that Fokina suddenly went 40-0 up on Cachin’s serve and off the second break-point he got, the Spaniard managed to break his opponent. Floodgates opened from there on as he served out the set and then quickly went two breaks up in the final set.
In a match lasting nearly two hours, Fokina went on to close out the encounter 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 to make it to the second round.

Van Assche Edges Past Muller
Having made the second round at the Bastad Open last week, Van Assche did that again here this week in Hamburg when he overcame Alexandre Muller in his opener.
He was a favourite going into the encounter but Muller did push him hard before Van Assche came through in two hours and 15 minutes to claim his spot in the second round.
Van Assche won 7-6 (3), 6-4 in a match that was filled with breaks of serves. In fact 11 off the 22 games saw the player getting broken including the second set in which Muller was serving for a 5-1 lead at one point and lost his serve three times in a row to go down.
The 19-year-old Frenchman will now hope to do slightly better than he has done all season by winning back to back matches in an ATP tournament for the first time. Up against him is a top-40 player though who could capsize that dream.
