Tatjana Maria got her Poland Open campaign off to a fine start as the German knocked out lucky loser Natalija Stevanović 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round.
The 35-yea-old german, ranked no. 65th in the world, was broken once in each set, but still she never looked in trouble as she broke the Serbian thrice in the opening set and thrice in the second as well to score a victory in an hour and 13 minutes.
Maria, who defended her Bogota Open title this year to claim her third career title, is 36-23 across levels this season and 12-9 on hard courts.
She won an ITF title in Pune on hard court this year. She has been inconsistent recently, having reached the final of the WTA 125 in Gaiba, but not doing enough in the next couple of events. Having got off to a good start she will now be aiming to build on the result.

Tauson Tops Snigur
Clara Tauson too won her first match in straight sets, beating Ukraine’s Daria Snigur on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old world no. 91 was broken in the first game of the match, but she bounced back to take six consecutive games and take a one-set-to-love lead.
In the second set, Tauson built a 3-0 lead, Snigur pulled the break back to draw level at 3-3. However, Tauson took the next three games in a row to beat Snigur 6-2 6-3.
It was Tauson’s first match on hard court this yeas and she is off to a flying start. She has played a lot of matches on indoor and clay tournaments. Her best on the tour was a run to the last eight in Linz.
She also featured in two ITF finals, both on indoor courts. While she won one of them in Germany, she lost the other final in Slovenia.
