While they have never faced off at the highest level, they played each other at the Kobe Challenger in 2018 and Nishioka had won that encounter.

Nishioka Returns Following Wimbledon Debacle

Nishioka has never been much of a grass court player and that was evidenced further by his grass swing this year.

He opted to play in just one such tournament, Wimbledon, and was ousted in the very first round by Daniel Elahi Galan. The manner of defeat, a straight-set loss, also spoke volumes about his affinity towards the surface.

What Nishioka will be more worried by is his performance in hardcourt competitions, a surface he particularly enjoys playing on.

He began well with a semifinal appearance at the Adelaide International and a fourth round at the Australian Open but since then the results have gone south.

Nishioka lost in the second round at the Delray Beach Open which kick-started a four-match losing streak on hardcourt surfaces and he returns to Atlanta hoping to turn that around. He had a first round bye here.

Vukic Made to Fight by Quinn

Ethan Quinn is ranked 394th in the world and wasn’t quite the favourite going into his first round match against Vukic. He did manage to put up a fighting display but Vukic used his slightly more experience to come through in an encounter that lasted nearly an hour and a half.

Vukic, who had earlier struggled in grass-court competitions with just two main draw wins from six competitions across different circuits, went past Quinn 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the first round.

He did face four break-points in the match but saved them all while getting the better of Quinn’s serve twice – both in the second set.

And this win followed a season in which Vukic was 24-10 on win-loss having also won a Challenger title on the same surface. Another final at the Seoul Challenger also punctuates his efforts and he might enter this second round match with some amount of confidence.

Nishioka v Vukic Prediction and Tip

Vukic might not be a favourite here but he will have the confidence that he could make things work in his favour. Expecting a three-set tussle that goes in Vukic’s favour.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Vukic to win: 1/1
