Stan Wawrinka v Federico Coria Head to Head

Wawrinka Easy Winner over Misolic

Coming off a second round exit at Gstaad last week, Wawrinka proved to be an easy winner in his opener here in Umag. He overcame the 21-year-old Austrian Filip Misolic in straight sets to the second round of his sixth successive tournament at the highest level.

Wawrinka won 6-3, 6-2 in a match lasting a mere 63 minutes.

A quick start to the proceedings saw Wawrinka take a 4-0 lead in the first set before he dropped his serve once. That was also the last time he would be broken in the match as he went on to wrap up the set and then break Misolic two more times in the second set.

The stakes will get higher in this second round despite facing an opponent outside the top 100 because of the quality of Coria on clay. Wawrinka himself is no mug on this surface and it could lead to an interesting match.

Coria Cruises against Huesler

Such has been Coria’s preference for clay-court surfaces only nine of his 36 matches this season have come on surfaces outside of the red dirt.

And while he would have loved to be a lot better than his current 108th-rank given he was in the top 50 not so long ago, Coria has begun to show those signs of old.

He first did that by making it to the quarterfinal of the Bastad Open where he had defeated Sebastian Baez. And now in this tournament’s opener, Coria coasted to an opening win over Marc-Andrea Huesler as well.

The Argentina won 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted an hour and 57 minutes as he carved out 17 breaking opportunities and broke his opponent on five occasions. While Coria dropped his serve on two occasions himself, once he had found his groove he went on to win 10 of the last 12 games and with that the match.

Wawrinka will be a difficult opposition but Coria’s form makes for an intriguing contest here.

Wawrinka v Coria Prediction and Tip

Wawrinka starts a 3/5 favourite here but we could have a keener tussle than that with the match expected to go into a third set.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Wawrinka to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/5
