Altmaier Demolishes Rublev

Altamier had come into his second round encounter on the back of a top performance in his opener against Richard Gasquet but even his strongest fan wouldn’t have expected what was to follow.

The world number 61 was a 3/1 underdog against Andrey Rublev in the second round but not only did he manage a win but the manner in which he carved out that victory was rather improbable.

In a match that lasted a mere hour and 15 minutes, Altmaier sent Rublev packing 6-2, 6-2 to enter the quarterfinal of an event this year for only the second time. He broke Rublev four times from the seven opportunities he got and faced just two break-points in the encounter, saving them both.

Altmaier had made the second round at Gstaad last week before he had fallen to Yannick Hanfmann. This time around he has the chance to enter the semifinal of an event for only the third time in his career.

Zhang Surprises Hanfmann

While it wasn’t as big a shock as Altmaier’s defeat of Rublev, Zhang overcame Yannick Hanfmann in another upset result of the second round in Hamburg.

After having eased past Jan Choinski in the first round, Zhang carved out a comeback from behind victory over the 2/5 favourite Hanfmann in the second to advance to the last eight stage of the tournament for the third time this season.

Zhang was on court for two hours and 10 minutes in his 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win, in which he was broken three times in the match including once in the final set. By then, however, Zhang had already run away to a 4-1 lead and was able to put that behind him.

Having earlier made it to the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career, Zhang will now be gunning for his maiden career spot in an ATP semifinals.

Can he surprise the 11/20 favourite?
