There have been three previous meetings between these two players, all of which came in 2019. Nishiori won them all, including two on clay and a third indoors on hardcourt.

Fritz Avenges Yibing Defeat

Having lost to Wu Yibing in the Dallas Open, this was Fritz’s chance to overcome his opponent and avenge that shock loss from earlier this year.

And the top seeded American did just that, clinching his place in the last eight stage with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Yibing.

Fritz was on court for an hour and a half and needed to get his way past Yibing’s strong serving and the 23 winners his opponent hit to come through in what turned out to be a difficult second set.

After breaking Yibing twice in the opening set – and losing his own serve once – Fritz failed to find a way past his opponent’s serve in the second. He missed out on four break-point opportunities in the second set before conceding two set-points too.

In the tie-breaker that followed, Fritz held his advantage throughout though and closed out the encounter.

Nishikori Continues to Impress on Return

Whatever might be the result of this quarterfinal encounter, Nishikori would be relieved to see that he definitely still belongs to the highest level. Having returned to the circuit after having last played tennis in 2021, Nishikori had won a Challenger title in June and followed it up with a 3-2 win-loss record on the same circuit.

This is his first ATP main tournament and Nishikori has already been working his magic.

In the first round he overcame Jordan Thompson in straight sets before clinching his quarterfinal berth with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Juncheng Shang in the second.

Nishikori will know that it is a very different – and difficult – proposition taking on a top-10 player but the manner in which he has gone about his business so far, it might not be that one-sided either.

Fritz v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

Fritz is a whopping 1/25 to win this and while we think he will go on to clinch it, we don’t think it’s going to be as straightforward as those odds tell us.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
