Top seed Taylor Fritz stormed into the Atlanta Open semifinals by knocking out Kei Nishikori in the round of 16 on Friday.
The American, ranked no. 9th in the world, needed just an hour and 10 minutes to dispatch the world no. 439.
Fritz was not broken in the match by the Japanese, who was playing his first ATP tournament in almost two years. Serving well through the contest, Fritz won 83% of his service points in the match, saved the only break point he faced and converted 3 of 4 to win the contest 6-4, 6-2.
Fritz had also won his round of 16 match in straight sets, beating China’s Wu Yibing 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The 25-year-old is in the final four in Atlanta for the third time. He was the runner-up in 2019 and a semifinalist in 2021. The five-time tour level champion, who won the Delray beach Open this year, will be aiming to reach his 11th career final on Saturday.

Wolf Cruises Past Koepfer
Eighth seed JJ Wolf cruised past Germany’s Dominik Koepfer to reach the second semifinal of the season.
The world no. 46, who was a semifinalist in Dallas, improved his season numbers to 21-16, including two qualifying wins in Queen’s. He is 9-6 on hard courts i 2023.
Wolf, who reached his only ATP final in the Firenze Open last year, needed 73 minutes to beat the German 6-2, 6-3. While he was not broken by Koepfer in the first set, the German did get an early break in the second. But it was Wolf, who broke twice each in the two sets to reach the semifinal.
Wolf had beaten Jason Jung 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and knocked out Maxime Cressy with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 victory in the second round.

Fritz is the superior player. He is 21-5 on hard courts this year and also has a good record in ATlanta. Expect the top seed to reach another final on Saturday.
