Mackenzie McDonald v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, on the clay of Barcelona last year and the grass of Queen’s Club just before Wimbledon.

Schwartzman won both matches in straight sets.

McDonald Has Made the Final Here Before

McDonald is still chasing his first win on the senior tour in singles, the closest he has been being reaching the final of this event two years ago, before eventually losing in straight sets to Jannik Sinner.

However, he did win the doubles event at the Japan Open last year, with partner Marcelo Melo.

The American had a poor clay court season, losing all six of the matches he played on the surface, including a first round defeat at the French Open.

However, results improved once he switched to grass, and he reached the quarter-finals in Rosmalen and the last four in Eastbourne, losing to the eventual winner, Francisco Cerundulo.

A first round defeat in Wimbledon to Alexander Bublik, was disappointing, however, as was his second round loss to the teenager Alex Michelsen in Newport Beach.

Schwartzman’s Form Struggles Continue

2023 has been a year to forget so far for Schwartzman. After years of being a top twenty player, and one who regularly featured in the top ten, he now finds his status in the top 100 under threat.

Indeed, he failed to get beyond the second round of any tournament, before reaching the third round of the French Open.

From there, his next stop was Queen’s Club where he reached the second round, the same stage that he was to reach at Wimbledon, losing in straight sets to Jannik Sinner.

He has not played since, and he will be hoping that the mental and physical break that he has enjoyed will have recharged his batteries for the second half of the season.

Schwartzman will know better than anyone that he can play better.

McDonald v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

Given McDonald’s history in this tournament, and Schwartzman’s recent struggles for form, the American must be considered favourite for this match.

That is unless Schwartzman has rediscovered the magic that once saw him ranked eighth in the world.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: McDonald to win: 7/9
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 23.5 games in the match: 7/5
