Popyrin Coming off Umag Title

Popyrin has had a reasonable amount of success on clay earlier too but most of it was on the lower circuits. At the highest level, the Aussie had registered a match win here and victory there but never really come into his own on clay.

But that changed last week when Popyrin overcame Stan Wawrinka in the final of the Umag Open to win his second career ATP title. He was forced to come back from being a set down to defeat Wawrinka in the final.

Earlier this season, he had also made the fourth round at the Rome Masters and all of this has meant he enters the Kitzbuhel Open ranked 57th in the world – his career-best ranking. Confidence-wise there would be no stopping Popyrin.

The bigger challenge for the Aussie would be to be in the right shape to play his sixth match in eight days and against a player who is himself coming off some success on the lower levels.

Rinderknech Wins Zug Challenger

It’s interesting to note that much like Popyrin, Rinderknech has also won a title last week. It came on the Challenger circuit, in Zug, but what that implies is Rinderknech himself has featured in five matches spread across six days and now with just a day’s gap will be playing in Kitzbuhel.

This makes it an equally challenging match for Rinderknech too and in turn, neutralises the issues that either player might face because of exhaustion.

Rinderknech has done well on clay in the past too, having won a Futures title and two Challenger tournament wins on this surface in his career. This season, however, hasn’t been the best for the Dutchman as he has struggled to make it past the early stages of tournaments on any surface.

In fact at the highest level, Rinderknech has made it two wins in a row in only one tournament in 2023 – in Mallorca on grass.

Can he now stave off the Popyrin challenge?
