Albert Ramos Vinolas v Juan Pablo Varillas Head to Head

This is a battle between two clay-court specialists and both have faced off five times, all of which came on clay. Ramos-Vinolas leads 4-1 including one earlier this month in Gstaad. Varillas’ only win had also come this year in Lyon.

Ramos Vinolas Sent Packing in Umag Opener

Having made the final of the Gstaad Open two weeks ago, Ramos Vinolas found it difficult to switch over to Umag last week. With a gap of just two days between the final in Gstaad and his opener at Umag, Ramos Vinolas failed to make it past Jaume Munar.

Ramos Vinolas put up a fight but was beaten in three sets to crash out of the tournament.

Still, Ramos Vinolas will want to take the positives out of the past couple of weeks with the 35-year-old proving he still belongs. After all, he had not won as much as he would have liked on clay this season and was 2-7 on win-loss coming into his opener in Gstaad.

He now faces a rather challenging opponent in the form of Varillas, who has had a decent season on clay. Can Ramos Vinolas use his experience to get past his 27-year-old opponent?

Varillas Coming off a Loss to Ramos Vinolas

The last time Varillas took to court for a competitive match was at the Gstaad Open and he was beaten in three sets by none other than Ramos Vinolas himself. It’s rare that players get a chance to avenge their losses in the very next match they play but that’s what the opportunity is for Varillas.

Varillas had made the quarterfinals at that tournament in Gstaad before his defeat to Ramos Vinolas, but more vitally, he is also coming off a fourth round appearance at the French Open earlier this year.

That was his career-best showing at a Grand Slam and it consisted of wins over Roberto Bautista-Agut and Hubert Hurkacz.

Not that it was a big surprise from Varillas either, who had come through as a qualifier at the Buenos Aires Open and made the semifinal where he went down to Cameron Norrie.

Later he would go on to feature in a title-deciding match at the San Remo Challenger, also played on clay.

Can he pull off a revenge win here?

Ramos Vinolas v Varillas Prediction and Tip

There isn’t much to choose between these two which make the 11/10 odds for a Ramos Vinolas win quite attractive. Could see a three-setter too.
