Marco Cecchinato v Daniel Elahi Galan Head to Head
No previous meetings have taken place between them at the highest level. They did face off on the Challenger circuit though with Cecchinato winning that clay court match in 2017.

Before coming into the Umag Open last week, Cecchinato had last won a main draw match at the highest level in Geneva. That was a first round win over Ben Shelton, seven tournaments ago and it had been followed by a second round loss at the hands of Wu Yibing.
After that followed a string of defeats, which included two opening round losses on the Challenger circuit.
What would have made it worse for Cecchinato is the fact that a lot of them came on clay, his favourite surface and one on which he has won all three of his ATP tournaments and 13 others at the Futures and Challengers level.
A win over Alexander Shevchenko last week in Umag helped him turn things around a little but Cecchinato ended up with a second round loss to Lorenzo Sonego.
He now faces an opponent who has himself been a bit of a letdown on clay this season.

Galan Falls in Hamburg Opener
Having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, Galan would have hoped for a better showing on his return to clay in the two tournaments following that.
Unfortunately for the Colombian player, things haven’t quite gone his way.
At the Bastad Open, he was an 8/11 favourite coming into his opener against Thiago Monteiro but fell to a three-set defeat despite being a set up. What followed was even worse as he failed to qualify for the Hamburg Open, going down to Jan Choinski despite starting out a 3/5 favourite.
And then despite making it through as a lucky loser, Galan was sent packing by Arthur Fils in the first round of that tournament.
Galan will now be playing in his third clay court competition at the highest level in a row and 11th of the season and he has won a mere two matches in the main draw. Despite Cecchinato’s poor form, Galan won’t have it easy by any stretch.

This could turn into a humdinger of an encounter that goes to the third set. Cecchinato holds the edge though.
