Isner Falls in Atlanta Opener

While Isner has had a horrible season otherwise, he showed some glimpses of his old sparkle on the grass courts of Newport. Wins over Alex Bolt, Corentin Moutet and Tommy Paul ensured a semifinal berth and a possible indicator that he was returning to his best.

Unfortunately for Isner, he first fell in that semifinal to Alex Michelsen and then lost his Atlanta Open opener to Dominik Koepfer.

While it’s one thing to make the semifinal and lose, a defeat at the hands of a player like Dominik Koepfer, who has done nothing of note in hardcourt competitions all his career would have stung.

More so from the perspective of going down from being a set up and losing the next two in tie-breakers.

Can he turn things around against Hijikata?

Hijikata Hoping to Keep Improving

Hijikata was ranked 375th in the world at the start of the 2022 season, still struggling to find his way at the lower circuits. Fast forward it by 18 months and here he is, on the cusp of a top-100 spot and a direct qualification for Grand Slams around the world as a result of that.

And that has been possible thanks to his showing in hardcourt and grass court competitions this season.

The Aussie made the second round at the Australian Open but then went on to win the Burnie Challenger event soon after – his second such title.

After an underwhelming season on clay, Hijikata then made the quarterfinal at Surbiton before doling out a career-best showing at the Rosmalen where he became a semifinalist – his best ever showing at the highest level.

He will hope to earn himself the scalp of a former top-10 player.

Isner v Hijikata Prediction and Tip

While both players are similarly-ranked, one of them is on his way down while the other is on his way up. That’s where the difference lies and that is also why Hijikata will be our pick to win this match.
