Cirstea Returns after Wimbledon

Cirstea took a bit of a break after Wimbledon, opting not to feature in any of the tournaments since then. She will return to competitive tennis with her first match at Washington and has a tricky opponent first up.

The Romanian number one had made the third round at Wimbledon but fallen in straight sets to Beatriz Haddad Maia in straight sets. She now returns to a surface on which she did quite well this year.

It started off as an underwhelming showing in the first couple of tournaments after losing in the opener at the Australian Open, but she followed that up with a performance to remember at both, the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open.

The world 32, one away from her career-best ranking of 31st, shocked the likes of Madison Keys, Caroline Garcia (twice), Karolina Muchova, Marketa Vondrousova and Aryna Sabalenka to make it to the quarterfinal in Indian Wells and semis in Miami.

Can she now begin from where she had left off?

Martic Also Made Wimbledon Third Round

Much like her opponent here, Martic is also playing in her first tournament since Wimbledon and in a coincidence, she had also made it to the third round at the tournament.

Before that Martic had shown her prowess on grass by coming through the qualifiers of the Eastbourne International and entering the last eight stage there.

It’s in hardcourt competitions that Martic has typically struggled. And even more so this season. The Croat has featured in six hardcourt competitions in 2023 but nothing of note.

In none of those tournaments did she win more than a round, also falling in the opening round at Dubai and Indian Wells. One mitigating statistic in this is her performance at the Linz Open, an indoor hardcourt competition, in which Martic made the final.

Can she now put up a fight against Cirstea?

Cirstea v Martic Prediction and Tip

As Cirstea begins her battle to make it into the top 30 for the first time, she will face a tricky opener against Martic. We believe Cirstea’s game on hardcourts should help her clinch this.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Cirstea to win: 5/6
